Browns sign new defensive end days after trading Myles Garrett

The Cleveland Browns won't be replacing Myles Garrett anytime soon.

The main player who will be relied upon to do so, though, actually came back in the trade from the Los Angeles Rams -- Jared Verse is a rising star who will try to make up for Garrett's loss.

Cleveland also signed a new defensive end this week, although one that isn't likely to have a huge impact.

The Browns announced Thursday that they have signed Benton Whitley to a contract.

Whitley is in his fifth year as an NFL journeyman after being an undrafted player out of Holy Cross.

The 27-year old edge rusher has played in six regular season games, and his total stat line includes one pass defensed and one fumble recovery.

The Rams originally signed Whitley after college in 2022.

He has since spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants.

Whitley spent time last summer with the Arizona Cardinals before spending much of the regular season on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad. He didn't appear in a regular season contest for the Bucs.

Most likely, Whitley will just serve as additional offseason depth, and potentially aim to make another practice squad.

But it's just a little more notable that the Browns brought him aboard after trading Garrett, since they play the same position.
