Alexander Isak outdone by Kostas Tsimikas as Kieran Morrison makes senior debut

Alexander Isak was unable to follow up his first goal back for Sweden as they drew 2-2 with Greece, but Kostas Tsimikas scored a rare effort of his own.

Isak scored an outrageous solo goal off the bench for Sweden on Monday and followed that up with a first start for his country since returning from injury.

It came in their final warmup friendly ahead of the World Cup, with Greece the visitors to Stockholm on Thursday night.

But Isak was unable to find the back of the net in a game in which he played 63 minutes and which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The opening goalscorer was, in fact, his new team-mate Tsimikas, who converted well with his right foot from the edge of the box for only the 10th senior goal of his career.

Tsimikas is expected to rejoin the Liverpool squad for next season after a loan spell with AS Roma and can hope for a clean slate under Andoni Iraola.

Viktor Gyokeres levelled the scores soon after half-time, with Graham Potter then making nine changes around the hour mark as Isak came off.

Gustaf Nilsson then put Sweden 2-1 up only for a last-minute equaliser from Georgios Masouras to deny them a win before heading to the World Cup.

Greece are not involved at this summer’s tournament and instead Tsimikas will be one of the first to report back for pre-season with Liverpool.

Another player who will be looking to make an impact early on at the AXA Training Centre is Kieran Morrison, with the 19-year-old also poised to be involved on the Reds’ tour of the United States.

Morrison made his debut for the Northern Ireland senior side on Thursday evening as he started in a 1-0 friendly win over Guinea.

Deployed on the right wing while wearing the No. 9 shirt, the teenager was given the first half and impressed manager Michael O’Neill with his 45-minute display.

“Start of the season, I wouldn’t have expected to hear that,” Morrison told BBC Sport when put to him that he is now a senior Northern Ireland international.

“But I’m very proud, my family’s very proud too, I’m just buzzing.”

Morrison could add another cap on Monday night when Northern Ireland travel to France for Les Bleus’ final World Cup warmup – with the youngster hoping to catch up with Ibrahima Konate and come away with Ousmane Dembele’s shirt.
