Scotland captain Andy Robertson seals Spurs move after Liverpool exit and sends fans video clip …

Defender sorts out club future ahead of finals

Scotland captain Andy Robertson will return from the World Cup as a Tottenham Hotspur player after the London club confirmed his signing on a free transfer.

Robertson will officially become a Spurs player on July 1 after ending a nine-year association with Liverpool earlier this month. The details of his contract have not been disclosed.

Capped 93 times by Scotland and currently in the United States as the nation prepares for its World Cup campaign, Robertson came close to joining Tottenham in January, only to decide to remain at Liverpool. He left Anfield having won the Premier League twice, the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Signing Robertson for next season is the start of a major rebuild under head coach Roberto de Zerbi. Tottenham avoided an embarrassing relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season and see Robertson as an integral part of their team for the 2026/27 campaign.

Spurs sporting director Johan Lange said: "We are delighted to welcome Andy to the club. First and foremost, he is an outstanding left-back - one of the best of all time in the Premier League, and someone who will improve our squad. In addition, his quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for - and won - major honours.

"Andy's professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the Club. We are excited for Andy's new chapter with us and look forward to having him here after the World Cup."

De Zerbi said: "Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team.

"He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can't wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him."

Robertson had also been linked with Spanish side Atletico Madrid, as well as Scottish Premiership champions Celtic - his boyhood club. However, the former Queen’s Park, Dundee United and Hull City defender has decided to prolong his stay in the top tier of English football.

In a video clip to Spurs supporters posted on social media, Robertson said: “Hi Tottenham fans. As you can see I’m not in Glasgow, I’m in America just now preparing for the World Cup. But I just wanted to send you a quick message to say I cannot wait to play for you guys, I cannot wait to meet you guys and to play in the stadium in front of you. I’m already looking forward to next season.”
