Cody Gakpo was one of a number of established Liverpool stars who lost their way during the 2025/26 season.
The Reds spent much of 2025/26 in freefall, finishing nowhere near title contention. Salah managed just six goals and six assists in the league – a pale shadow of the 34-goal, 23-assist monster he was the season prior.
In 2024/25, Gakpo hit double figures in the Premier League, registering 10 goals and 4 assists in 35 league appearances – a solid return that helped fuel the title run.
This past season has told a very different story, with his Premier League output dropping to a modest 7 goals and 5 assists in 36 appearances.
For a player of his quality, those numbers represent a significant step backwards.
Now, with Slot having lost his job at Anfield and replaced by Basque coach Andoni Iraola, Gakpo’s future at the club is suddenly very much in doubt. According to a report from Soccernews.nl, Gakpo himself is open to a move away, and he has admirers from the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham Hotspur are named as the club showing serious interest in the 27-year-old attacker.
Mounir Boualin reports:
“The winger has absolutely no reason to complain about interest. Several English sources report to SoccerNews that Tottenham Hotspur is seriously interested in Gakpo. They want to try to get the Dutchman out of Liverpool in the coming period. With the new project under coach Roberto De Zerbi, they want to convince him to make the step to London.”
“Behind the scenes, Tottenham is working on a plan to convince the attacker and Liverpool in the coming period.”
It’s added that things could move quickly after the World Cup:
“Tottenham see in Gakpo a reinforcement to start the reconstruction. So it may just be that after the World Cup we will no longer see the Dutchman in a red, but in a white shirt.”
Still, given how highly Liverpool value his versatility across the frontline and his ability to cover all three attacking roles, it is worth treating these claims with a degree of caution.
