Spurs’ Gregg Popovich tells ex-player about desire to coach during NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs will be looking to tie the series against the New York Knicks in Game 2, and it will be up to the adjustments they make after falling in Game 1. The Spurs haven't had a problem bouncing back after a loss in the postseason, and that means they have the right coaching in these situations.

One key piece in all of this is probably Gregg Popovich, who is still around the team and probably giving out advice whenever he can. It makes sense; Popovich has coached in six NBA Finals throughout his career and won five of them.

Former NBA player Antonio Daniels recently shared a conversation he had with Popovich, and he has a desire to be coaching on the biggest stage right now.

“We watched [Game 1] in Pop's suite with him. I asked him tonight ‘Do you miss it?' And he said, ‘You have no idea how much. I wish I was down there right now,'” Daniels said on the Game Over podcast.

There's no doubt that Popovich is one of the greatest minds when it comes to coaching, and he's probably scheming up plays in his head while he's watching the Spurs play. Even though he can't coach them, he's still giving the young team advice, and Victor Wembanyama revealed what he texted him after Game 1.

“I haven't talked to him yet, but yes, he's texted me,” Wembanyama said. “In the big lines, it was that I've been bad and I'm better than this.”

Popovich has always seemed to be the type of person who gives tough love, and it's hard to say it hasn't worked. He's coached some of the best players to ever play the game, and they'd probably credit him for their success. If the Spurs are crowned champions after this series, Popovich will definitely be getting some credit.
