Arne Slot’s time at Liverpool ended almost as abruptly as it began. One moment he was the carefully chosen successor to Jurgen Klopp, the next he was out of the door, with Andoni Iraola stepping into the hot seat on Thursday evening.
The pace of modern football means that even a manager of Slot’s profile does not stay on the market for long, and within days the rumour mill had moved on from his dismissal to the inevitable question: what comes next for the Dutchman?
Unsurprisingly, the Dutch national team has already been mentioned as a potential landing spot. Slot has been linked with the Netherlands job, with Ronald Koeman’s contract due to expire after the 2026 World Cup.
But one club that will reportedly not be his next location is AC Mila.
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has reported that AC Milan’s Board Director Gerry Cardinale has ended the pursuit of Arne Slot, instead choosing former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner:
“Gerry Cardinale has imposed his choice over Zlatan Ibrahimović’s and has definitively ended the pursuit of Arne Slot. Oliver Glasner now the frontrunner to become AC Milan’s new head coach. The deal is expected to be finalized shortly.” he reported.
Cardinale is a key figure at RedBird Capital Partners, the American investment firm that owns a controlling stake in Milan and also holds a minority share in Fenway Sports Group.
RedBird’s involvement with FSG is described as a passive investment rather than direct control, but it still means decisions made in one corner of the empire are watched closely in another.
