Brunson's high school basketball coach, Pat Ambrose, gave his former standout quite the compliment, evoking the name of Morgan Freeman, per Stefan Bondy of The New York Post. Ambrose says that Brunson is similar to that character in the sense of continuing to defy expectations and do whatever it takes to win.
Brunson attended Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. He led Stevenson to their first IHSA Class 4A state championship in 2015. Additionally, he set a title game record of 30 points.
He finished his high school career with 2,682 points, 20th on the all-time list. While Brunson isn't the most physically gifted player, he has relied on basketball intelligence, quickness, and the ability to control the pace. Thus, enabling him to be where he is now.
