Rangers could cause 'complication' in Everton transfer as EFL club eye £11m World Cup bound star

Sheffield United could look to add former Ibrox defender to Bramall Lane ranks ahead of new Championship season.

It looks set to be another busy summer transfer window across the country as excitement around the World Cup finals also builds.

Rangers have already been active in snapping up one North America bound star with the signing of Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland from Premiership rivals Hearts. Supporters will be hoping the goal scorer is just one of many new faces arriving at Ibrox over the next few month’s as Danny Rohl looks to strengthen his first team options.

Could they follow on the capture of Shankland by adding yet another of Steve Clarke’s 26 man squad to their ranks? Not just that but a player who knows the club very, very well.

Rangers transfer interest in £11m Everton defender could cause ‘complication’ for Sheffield United

According to a report from The Star - Sheffield, a move is currently being plotted by English Football League Championship outfit Sheffield United for former Rangers full-back Nathan Patterson. The defender has struggled for regular minutes at Everton ever since signing for the Premier League side due to a combination of injuries and managerial changes.

£11 million was the fee paid to Rangers back in 2022 for the player but it’s not reported how much of that the Toffees would look to recoup in order to let the 24-year old move on. Whatever the fee, if they do decided to try and ship him off then that may also lead to transfer rivals taking notice and potentially throwing their hats in the ring.

Interestingly, the report from The Star claims that any interest from Rangers in bringing Patterson back to Ibrox would prove a ‘complication’ in United trying to get a deal over the line. However, it’s unclear if any such interest from the Glasgow giants would be likely to materialise.

A right-back certainly feels high on the shopping lift following James Tavernier’s departure so Patterson clearly ticks that box. Any move for Patterson would likely come down to how much of the £11 million that Everton paid for him that they would expect back.

The initial transfer deal that saw him leave Ibrox was also said to include a number of add-ons and, if one of those was a sell-on clause, then snapping him up ahead of another club would also see them miss out on a cash windfall via that transfer.

Nathan Patterson headed for FIFA World Cup with Steve Clarke’s Scotland

If he doesn’t already have a long list of potential suitors lining up for his signature then Patterson will certainly get the chance to put himself in the shop window this summer. The 24-year old is with the Scotland men’s national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in USA, Canada and Mexico.

He will face competition from Brentford’s Aaron Hickey and Celtic’s Anthony Ralston for game time at right back with Hickey expected to be the first choice in that position. Patterson currently has 26 caps for Scotland with the first of those coming back in 2021 while he was still with Rangers.
