Cooper is scheduled to appear before a judge Friday morning, with another hearing set for Monday.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by 9News, the incident stemmed from a dispute over Cooper’s cell phone, with his girlfriend attempting to take the device and Cooper trying to hold on to it. His girlfriend was also arrested and faces criminal mischief and domestic violence charges, according to the affidavit.
The Broncos issued a brief statement in response to the arrest.
“We are aware of the matter and gathering more information,” the team said.
A seventh-round pick out of Ohio State in the 2021 NFL Draft, Cooper has emerged as a key piece of Denver’s pass rush. He signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension with the Broncos in November 2024.
Cooper recorded 8.5 sacks in his 2023 breakout season. He followed that up with 10.5 in 2024 and then had 8 sacks and 50 combined tackles across 17 games last season, helping anchor a Broncos defense that powered the team to the AFC Championship Game. He registered a sack in Denver’s title-game loss to the New England Patriots.
