Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama calls shot to Nike execs with face-of-NBA mic drop

Once-in-a-lifetime athletes tend to be overflowing with confidence. LeBron James got a “Chosen 1” tattoo when he was still a teenager, and Michael Jordan made a free throw with his eyes closed. Victor Wembanyama obviously has a long way to go before he can be compared to those all-time greats, but the San Antonio Spurs superstar already has the self-belief needed to pursue such immortality.

About a year before he even competed in a playoff game, Wembanyama issued a grand proclamation in a room filled with Nike executives. “I’m not gonna give basketball a choice of who the face is going to be,” he said, according to The Athletic's Jared Weiss.

Those words do not read as braggadocio. They convey a tone of defiance. Wembanyama understands that there are other worthy players contending for that prestigious label/responsibility, but he intends to will himself and his team to the pinnacle. The All-NBA First-Team selection and Defensive Player of the Year, at just 22 years of age, is already nearing the top. Heck, his declaration may have already been proven true.

Even if the Spurs are unable to slow down the seemingly unstoppable New York Knicks and capture the Larry O'Brien Trophy this month, Victor Wembanyama will enter the 2026-27 campaign as the most recognizable and discussed talent in the league, aside from LeBron James, Stephen Curry and a potentially traded Giannis Antetokounmpo.

San Antonio's rebuild increased anticipation, and a blood clot delayed his arrival, but the 7-foot-4 Frenchman has forced his way into households around the world. While there are plenty of fans who take issue with some of his comments and on-court actions, he has managed to surpass the overwhelming hype surrounding him through the first three years of his NBA career.

But Wembanyama is now approaching a pivotal point in his first Finals appearance. Following a 6-of-21, six-turnover performance in a 105-95 Game 1 loss versus the Knicks, he must demonstrate the same level of defiance and self-assurance that he did while speaking with those Nike execs. Game 2 tips off on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
