After adding Tyler Allgeier in free agency and reportedly using the No. 3 overall pick on Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love, Arizona suddenly has several options at running back, making Conner a potential trade candidate.
Conner has been one of the [Cardinals](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/arizona-cardinals)’ best free-agent signings in recent years. He delivered back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2023 and 2024, providing leadership, toughness, and consistency for an offense built around quarterback Kyler Murray at the time. Conner rushed for 1,094 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024 while adding 47 receptions for 414 yards, proving he remained one of the NFL’s most productive dual-threat backs.
However, circumstances have changed. Conner turned 31 this offseason and is coming off a season-ending ankle injury that limited him to just three games in 2025. Reports indicate he underwent surgery after the injury and spent much of the year rehabbing.

The Cardinals also reworked Conner’s contract this spring, with reports stating that he accepted a pay cut to remain with the organization. While that move suggests Arizona still values his presence, it also highlights the team’s desire for greater financial flexibility and a younger roster.
With only one year remaining on his contract, Arizona could explore trade offers if younger backs emerge during training camp. Allgeier would provide veteran depth, while Love could become the franchise’s long-term answer in the backfield.
That said, moving Conner would not be an easy decision. His production, leadership, and experience remain valuable assets for a team hoping to compete in the NFC West. Unless the Cardinals receive a strong offer, keeping Conner as a mentor and contributor may ultimately be the smarter move.
