Tottenham are eyeing a shock swoop for Liverpool forward.
Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are working hard on strengthening the squad after a second successive disastrous Premier League season, which saw them finish 17th again and escape relegation on the final day of the season.
Spurs have confirmed the signing of Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool. Marcos Senesi is set to follow suit, having already agreed a verbal deal on a free transfer from Bournemouth. The North Londoners have also seen their first bid for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke rejected.
Tottenham need reinforcements in attack too, with the club already in talks with Manchester City for Savinho. Randal Kolo Muani is set to go back to PSG after the expiry of his loan spell in N17, while Mathys Tel has been attracting interest from Portuguese champions FC Porto. Not to forget, Richarlison has entered the final year of his contract, and Spurs may decide to cash him in this summer.
Tottenham working on a deal to sign Liverpool star
Now, according to Dutch outlet Soccer News, Tottenham are plotting an offer to lure Cody Gakpo away from Liverpool. The North London outfit are ‘seriously’ interested in the Dutch winger, who is keen to leave Anfield following the exit of title-winning manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool have decided to replace Slot with Andoni Iraola at the helm, hoping to make changes to the squad that went trophyless this past season. The Merseysiders will buy and sell some big names this summer as they try to back their new boss in the transfer market. After Ibrahima Konate was released upon the expiry of his contract earlier this week, it looks like Cody Gakpo appears to be the next player to follow the Frenchman’s footsteps out of Anfield.
The Netherlands international’s form fell off the cliff as compared to Liverpool’s 2024/25 title-winning campaign. He scored nine times and chipped in with six assists in 52 appearances, which is quite ordinary from a player of Gakpo’s quality and experience. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old is not short of suitors, with Tottenham trying to convince him to become a part of Roberto De Zerbi’s project.

Gakpo could fit in well in De Zerbi’s system
For Tottenham, Gakpo would sort of hit one of the most pressing needs at Hotspur Way, given that there is no experienced left-winger in the squad. Tel and Wilson Odobert are very young and developing, with the latter unlikely to return to action this year after sustaining an ACL injury in March. Kolo Muani is certainly heading back to PSG after his underwhelming loan spell.
So, the left-wing position surely needs real investment, and that is where Gakpo’s directness, flair, movement and goal threat come into the picture. The Netherlands international’s Premier League-winning experience will add a lot of value to a Tottenham squad hungry to compete well in all domestic competitions next season.
The ex-PSV Eindhoven star also fits in well in De Zerbi’s possession-based, pressing and aggressive style of play. Also, he could potentially revive his strong understanding with Robertson on the left flank at Tottenham. If Liverpool’s asking price and Gakpo’s wages are well within the club’s allocated financial structure, we must try to add him to De Zerbi’s squad.
