Speaking at Friday's press conference, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez provided an update on the fitness of his squad ahead of Saturday's international friendly against Chile.
The Seleção das Quinas will face the Super Eagles on Portugal Day (Wednesday, June 10), a national public holiday marking the anniversary of the death of the legendary poet Luís de Camões.
Martínez confirmed that Manchester City right-back Matheus Nunes is unfit to train and will therefore be absent from the squad to face Chile, while João Félix will undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability.
Nunes was an unused substitute the last time Portugal faced the Super Eagles, back in November 2022, a game in which Felix played the full ninety minutes.
"Unfortunately, Matheus Nunes is not yet fit to train, so he is out of the squad for tomorrow. It's not the time to take risks. We hope Matheus will be fit for the second game against Nigeria," Roberto Martínez was quoted as saying by A Bola.
"João Félix will train and we will make a decision after training, but I think it's a different situation. I feel it's positive and that he will be fit to play tomorrow."
Martínez added that facing Nigeria on Portugal Day forms part of Portugal's preparations, including the psychological conditioning of the national team players.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles began training in Lisbon on Friday, with 22 players, among them Samuel Chukwueze, in attendance.
