5 players Liverpool must sign this summer after Andoni Iraola confirmation

Liverpool will need to be very active in the transfer market this summer to ensure that Andoni Iraola has a roster of players that is capable of challenging on all fronts next term

After a season in which Liverpool fell short of expectations, more changes this summer were inevitable. Andoni Iraola taking over from Arne Slot is one major one, but it won't be the last.

In the transfer market, significant additions are required. To play Iraola's intense style, numbers are required — and having lost Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate already, the Reds are playing catch-up.

At least two wingers are a must to inject speed and quality in the final third. Yan Diomande is one target, though PSG will offer stern competition, and he won't come cheap or without a fight from his current employer.

With a supposed price tag of as much as $150 million (£112 million), that would eat into the Liverpool budget for the summer, and RB Leipzig is under no pressure to sell.

Indeed, the German side wants to keep Diomande for another season if it can. Having qualified for the Champions League, it is not short of cash and only signed the Ivorian last summer.

Elsewhere, a center-back to replace Ibrahima Konate should be another priority. Jeremy Jacquet is coming in and Giovanni Leoni is another very highly rated talent, but Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are the only experienced options as things stand.

Adding another body who can slot into the team when necessary — not least given Gomez's injury history and the fact that he might be needed at full-back too — would be very useful.

A right-back could be a good idea, but the full extent of Conor Bradley's injury is yet to be fully revealed.

Jeremie Frimpong has work to do to convince in terms of being a regular option there, but there are two players — when fit — who can do the role.

In midfield, fresh legs are required, though Alexis Mac Allister or Curtis Jones would likely have to leave to free up space. It remains to be seen whether the latter might see a clearer route to minutes under Iraola.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

With Alisson Becker seemingly likely to stay, the goalkeeper position should be fine. At left-back, Kostas Tsimikas can replace the departed Andy Robertson, who has signed for Spurs.

Signing a new number nine — having splashed so much last summer — seems unlikely, though Hugo Ekitike's long-term injury provides a headache.

Adding a versatile attacker who can fill in down the middle for now would be a smart move instead. Someone like Anthony Gordon would have fitted the bill, but he has chosen a move to Barcelona.

In short, a big summer lies ahead for Liverpool to get its roster in shape. Two forwards, a midfielder and maybe even two defenders are a must to give Iraola the best chance of success.
