Knicks survive late Spurs rally, take 2-0 NBA Finals lead behind 13th straight win

The New York Knicks are now just two victories away from ending a 53-year championship drought.

Behind another resilient performance and a late defensive stand, the Knicks escaped with a dramatic 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals on Friday night. The win was New York’s 13th consecutive victory and gave the franchise a commanding 2-0 series lead as the Finals shift to Madison Square Garden.

New York appeared in control for much of the second half, building a 14-point fourth-quarter lead behind the stellar play of Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson. However, the Spurs stormed back and briefly grabbed their first lead of the second half when Victor Wembanyama completed an and-one layup with 57.3 seconds remaining.

The game turned chaotic in the final moments.

After Brunson connected on a difficult one-legged fadeaway jumper with 39.3 seconds left, San Antonio had a chance to hold for the final shot in a tie game. Instead, disaster struck. Following a defensive stop, Wembanyama secured the rebound and attempted an outlet pass to Stephon Castle. Castle never looked back, and the ball bounced off his back, resulting in a costly live-ball turnover. Wembanyama then fouled Brunson, giving New York a critical possession.

Knicks seize control of NBA Finals

The Spurs still had one final opportunity. After Mike Brown inserted Mitchell Robinson specifically to defend Wembanyama, the Spurs star was forced into a difficult fadeaway jumper at the buzzer. The shot clanged off the rim, OG Anunoby secured the rebound, and the Knicks celebrated another road victory.

Towns was outstanding, finishing with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists, while Brunson added 20 points and six assists. Mikal Bridges contributed 20 points, including 11 in a pivotal second quarter that helped erase an early 16-point deficit.

For San Antonio, Wembanyama finished with 29 points and 9 rebounds, while De’Aaron Fox added 20 points and Devin Vassell scored 14.

New York’s toughness, rebounding, and late-game execution once again proved decisive. Now, with the series headed to New York, the Knicks stand two wins away from capturing their first NBA championship since 1973.
