Bold Premier League manager statement as Newcastle United make Eddie Howe decision

There were calls from some Newcastle united supporters on social media to appoint new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola.

Andoni Iraola has vowed to “fight for titles” after being confirmed as the new Liverpool manager.

The Reds pulled the trigger on Arne Slot last weekend amid growing fan discontent on Merseyside. Just one year earlier, the Dutchman lifted the Premier League trophy and he had been tipped to be given another season.

However, the Anfield hierarchy acted following an underwhelming end to the campaign - with Iraola free having decided against extending his Bournemouth contract. Many Toon fans tipped Iraola as a potential Newcastle manager as the pressure mounted on Eddie Howe.

The Spaniard - despite losing several high-profile players - masterminded an 18-game unbeaten run to secure Europa League football for the first time in Bournemouth’s history. Iraola put Newcastle to the sword 2-1 at St James’ Park in April - mounting further pressure on Howe.

‘I’m excited’ - Andoni Iraola

“(I’m) really excited, really excited, because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world,” he told the Liverpool website. “Feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club.

“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted to Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool, but obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles - I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It’s difficult to find it, so I’m really excited to start.”

Newcastle United sticking by Eddie Howe

Of the 20 Premier League managers at the start of last season, only eight - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Newcastle, Everton and Leeds United - are poised to remain in charge for the new campaign.

There have been calls from sections of the Newcastle fanbase to replace Howe after losing both Tyne-Wear derbies to bitter rivals Sunderland and finishing 12th in the Premier League. However, the Toon hierarchy have stuck by the man who won the Carabao Cup and twice secured Champions League football.
