Why Arne Slot rejected Fulham: Sacked Liverpool head coach waits for new job

Arne Slot has rejected an approach from Fulham to take over from Marco Silva, with the recently sacked Liverpool head coach prepared to wait for his next role.

Slot is in demand following his surprise departure from Liverpool, with AC Milan among the clubs already linked with the Dutchman.

He already received his first prospective job offer only days after his dismissal from the Anfield job, which would have seen him stay in the Premier League.

But the Times‘ Gary Jacob reports that Slot turned down advances from Fulham as he is “not believed to be interested in the vacancy.”

Silva has already confirmed his exit on the expiry of his contract, with the Portuguese set to replace Jose Mourinho at Benfica.

Slot was identified as a leading candidate but is “taking his time to choose next role” and “wants to wait for the right opportunity.”

Interestingly, Jacob notes the ongoing speculation around Slot potentially replacing Ronald Koeman as Netherlands manager after the World Cup.

Though Koeman will lead the Dutch to the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico there is a growing sense that the KNVB will be seeking a new manager after its conclusion.

Could Arne Slot take the Netherlands job?

De Telegraaf journalist Marcel van der Kraan told talkSPORT earlier this week that he believes Slot would be “very much up for” taking over the national team.

“I think Arne Slot is very, very much up for that; he’s probably the ideal candidate,” Van der Kraan explained.

“He can play his Dutch style of football – the passing, attacking style, whatever you call it. I think the Dutch would be happy to have him.”

It remains to be seen if AC Milan will make an approach for Slot as they weigh up their options to replace Max Allegri, but the 47-year-old is seemingly eager not to rush into his next job.

Fulham would clearly be a step down from Liverpool and that may not appeal to a head coach who just over a year ago was lifting the Premier League title.

But it is doubtful that Slot will be offered a top European role given the manner of his exit from Anfield and instead may be required to rebuild his reputation a step below.

Ajax were reported to have eyed the former Feyenoord head coach as their next appointment earlier this year but have since brought in Michel from Girona.
