Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa admits his future at the club is up in the air this summer, as he potentially looks for more regular playing time.
The Andoni Iraola era is now underway at Anfield, with the 43-year-old speaking well in his first interview as the Reds’ head coach, saying:
“I think I have the advantage that I’ve been here already three years in the Premier League and people for sure have seen Bournemouth play. There are some things that obviously we need to change coaching Liverpool. But I wouldn’t like to lose our identity, the intensity, the aggressiveness, the organisation, certain things that I would like always to have in my team.
“Obviously you have to adapt to the players you have and it’s not the same, one club or the other, but there are fundamentals that I also think match quite well [with] what Liverpool has been during a lot of years that I think we can make it work.”
Iraola now has to bring in the right players to suit his system, as well as well dispatch of those indiviuduals whop aren’t an important part of his plans.
Chiesa could be one of those, having struggled to be a regular ever since joining Liverpool from Juventus in 2024, and in quotes shared by Fabrizio Romano on X, he gave an update on his future:
“I want to play regularly, if I don’t find continuity in Premier League I have to look elsewhere. The first year of Liverpool I practically didn’t play…I’m going to pre season tour in the USA, then I’ll talk to the club and the new coach Iraola and we’ll see.”
Does Federico Chiesa have a future at Liverpool?
In truth, it is hard to see Chiesa being retained by Liverpool, even though he was described as “world-class” by Alessandro Pierini during Euro 2020 back in 2021.
The 28-year-old isn’t the player he once was, losing some speed and potency in the final third, and the Reds should look to cash in on him this summer.
Liverpool are unlikely to get much for Chiesa’s services, but he is contracted until the summer of 2028, and receiving a fee is better than retaining him for another year.
The Italian will always be a popular figure at Anfield, having given his all and displayed a strong team ethic, but it is a signing that has never really taken off.
