Liverpool consider triggering £50m release clause for Wolves flop to become first Iraola…

Andoni Iraola will want to get to work quickly, after being named as the new Liverpool manager this week.

The former Bournemouth boss was installed as the new Anfield boss, taking over after Arne Slot was sacked a week ago.

Slot had guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season in England, but then stuttered to a fifth-placed finish this year, leading to his sacking.

Iraola, meanwhile, took Bournemouth into Europe for the first time in the club's history, ending the 2025/26 campaign on a 19-game unbeaten streak to finish sixth.

Liverpool need wide players in the summer transfer window

Mohamed Salah

There will be new, bigger pressures on the Spaniard at Anfield as he takes charge of one of the Premier League's big six and he will also find he has a bigger budget to work with in the summer transfer window.

The Reds splashed out more than £400million on new signings last summer and are likely to be busy again as Iraola tries to put his stamp on the squad.

At least one new wide forward is likely to come into the club, with Mohamed Salah leaving after his contract was terminated and question marks over the futures of Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa.

Liverool have been heavily linked with a move to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, but he comes with an £87million price tag around his shoulders, following an impressive season in the Bundesliga.

Liverpool could, instead, make a cheaper move for someone who has Premier League experience already under his belt, albeit only for a season and a pretty underwhelming one at that - he started just 16 games, scoring two goals and assisting one.

Liverpool top the list for Trincao signing

francisco trincao

According to reports from Record in Portugal, Liverpool are "closest" to signing Francisco Trincao from Sporting CP. The Portuguese team are looking to sell before they can make signings this summer, with Trincao a potential departure for around £50million.

Liverpool are at the "top of the list" of suitors for his signature and have done a lot of work in the background and are most likely to trigger the player's £50million release clause this summer.

Trincao has spent the last four seasons in the Portuguese League with Sporting CP, initially on loan from Barcelona before making the move permanent. He has 98 goal involvements in 208 matches for Sporting, with 47 goals and 51 assists.

He has been described as a "complete player" and former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, who had him at Sporting, said he was a "pure talent".
