Liverpool’s summer of upheaval shows no sign of slowing down.
Andoni Iraola has been confirmed as head coach, replacing the sacked Arne Slot, but the squad he inherits is already being reshaped around him in ways that demand urgent answers.
Ibrahima Konate’s departure is confirmed, leaving a significant hole in central defence.
Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are gone.
The full-back positions on both sides of the pitch require serious attention, especially with injury worries and with that need identified, Richard Hughes and Liverpool’s recruitment team have been working the phones across Europe.
One name that emerged prominently on their shortlist was a young German international whose profile — attack-minded, technically excellent, versatile across the defensive line, ticked all the boxes.
Liverpool’s scouts had monitored him in the past, with the player’s performances in the Bundesliga drawing consistent admiration from multiple Premier League clubs simultaneously.
But according to reports from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool may have been beaten to the punch, and decisively so.
Nathaniel Brown, the 22-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt left-back, has reportedly reached a full verbal agreement with Bayern Munich over a summer transfer.
The Germany international has reportedly agreed personal terms on a long-term contract running until 2031, following positive discussions with Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, who has been personally pushing for the deal.
Brown, currently in Chicago with the German national team preparing for the World Cup, wants the move to the Allianz Arena with immediate effect.
The obstacle is the fee.
Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche is demanding €60 million, a figure that represents an extraordinary profit on the €3 million Bayern paid Nürnberg for the defender in January 2024.
Bayern’s own financial situation, complicated by the need to move on either Alphonso Davies or Hiroki Ito before committing to a major outlay, means the deal is not yet done.
That gap is exactly the opening Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City have been watching for.
All three clubs retain genuine interest and remain positioned to move if the Bayern-Frankfurt negotiations stall.
Brown’s credentials make the scramble entirely understandable.
This season alone he contributed four goals and four assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances, earned Frankfurt’s Player of the Season award, and delivered in the Champions League.
He operates primarily as a left-back but can cover the right side and push forward as a winger, exactly the kind of positional flexibility that modern pressing managers covet.
He has also been included in Germany’s 26-man World Cup squad.
If he performs on that stage, Frankfurt’s valuation will only climb higher.
The player they wanted has told Bayern yes.
The race is not over, but it just got significantly harder.
