Game 2 of the NBA Finals turned into a devastating finish for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, as they came up just short in a 105-104 loss to the New York Knicks. After already dropping Game 1 at home, the Spurs now find themselves trailing 0-2 in the series, while the Knicks extended their remarkable postseason winning streak to 13 games.
The game had all the ingredients of a dramatic comeback, as the Spurs erased a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run and even managed to briefly grab a one-point lead. It set up a tense final stretch, but when it mattered most, the Spurs could not close it out.
At halftime, Wembanyama’s performance already reflected a difficult night. He had as many turnovers as made field goals, and former NBA star Charles Barkley said the young star was visibly rattled by the intensity of the series.
"Wemby's in shock right now,” Barkley said. “It's probably been a long time since he's got his — kicked like this. When you're a great player, very rarely do you get your — kicked. Wemby's spinning... He's 22. He's gonna own the league soon. But right now, big KAT is just taking his ass to the woodshed. Plain and simple."
Wembanyama still finished with a game-high 29 points and 9 rebounds, but the closing minutes became the defining storyline once again. He repeatedly referenced the final three possessions, where two missed mid-range attempts and a costly turnover ultimately swung the game in the Knicks’ favor.
“We needed to win that game,” Wembanyama said. “This game was ours. But at this point it’s done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us next game? Absolutely.”
For the Spurs, the frustration comes not only from the narrow margin but also from the way the game slipped away after they had fought their way back into it. The inability to execute in the final possessions proved costly in a game that was otherwise evenly balanced down the stretch.
Meanwhile, the Knicks continue to look unstoppable, as they are now just two wins away from a championship sweep. They have not lost a game in nearly two months, putting them in rare historical territory if they can complete the run.
