Chipotle plans to give away 53,000 free burritos after the final game of this year’s men’s NBA championship series.

The first 53,000 fans to text a code posted on X after the series ends will get a free entrée offer.

The promo ties into the number 53, nodding to both the championship storyline and Chipotle’s “real ingredients” messaging.

Sports have a way of turning entire cities into one giant screaming group chat. And if you live in New York right now and have been anywhere near a bar, restaurant, or vaguely television-equipped room during these NBA Finals games, you already know what I’m talking about.

A first-place win is huge on its own, obviously, but Chipotle has also found a pretty decent way to ride the celebration wave: free burritos. A lot of them.

Instead of tying their generosity to one specific game moment, the chain is saving the whole thing for the end of the series. Once the final game wraps, Chipotle says it’ll drop a text-to-win code on X, and the first 53,000 people to text it to 888-222 will score a free entree. That’s a lot of burritos and some very, very fast thumbs.

Chipotle is leaning hard into the fact that both teams in this year’s title matchup connect back to 1973 in different ways, and the chain used that 53-year thread as the hook for the giveaway.

“This year's series created a connection we couldn't ignore: 53 years tied to a unique championship storyline and 53 real ingredients that define Chipotle, said Stephanie Perdue, Chipotle’s Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing. Giving away 53,000 free burritos is our way of bringing that story to life for fans.”

To be fair, Chipotle has gotten very comfortable handing out free food for the right occasion. Earlier this year, the brand ran a big Super Bowl promo with free entrees for fans, and it’s also offered food giveaways for teachers, healthcare workers, and even people willing to show up with a tattoo.

As for the portion scoop, on the other hand, remains another conversation entirely.
