The Kansas City Chiefs are glad to have offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy back in the fold, with the coach known for never being afraid to hold anyone accountable. Whether it's three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes or the final player on the offensive roster, fans understand that Bieniemy demands the best, and this allows the words of the accomplished coach to carry some weight. Bieniemy's reaction to Kenneth Walker's performance in OTAs is the first glimpse back into the Chiefs with the new OC, and it seems Walker is making quite the impression on the veteran coach.
Bieniemy's comments came courtesy of Sleeper Chiefs with the coach offering the following on Walker, “Very competitive, he’s a hard worker, doesn’t take anything for granted, he’s what you want— the kid works his tail off in the classroom, in the weight room and on the field as well.” This is high praise from a trusted voice that is coming off an incredibly productive season as the running backs coach with the Chicago Bears.
The Bears enjoyed the duo of D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai combining for 1,870 rushing yards under Bieniemy's leadership. It's also worth noting here that not since the coordinator departed KC have the Chiefs offered a consistent rushing attack, something that Walker is expected to change early in the season.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy offers high praise for Kenneth Walker
Not only did the Chiefs add Walker, but also exciting fifth-round rookie Emmett Johnson, who should benefit from the return of Bieniemy as well. It's easy to imagine from this praise the Chiefs having a ceiling of last year's Bears production while having Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid running the show. This paints an exciting picture of a balanced attack that the franchise has been far too long.
There is a level of expectation that this will be the case early in the season, especially as the Chiefs work to protect Mahomes coming off his ACL tear. This plan appears to be on track, with Bieniemy's words carrying a lot of weight when you consider the fact that the coach isn't afraid to call out guys who aren't performing up to par.
Even if Bieniemy didn't want to call out Walker, there are many ways the questions could've been answered without offering this level of praise. It speaks to a back with an incredibly high ceiling and serves as a reminder of the impact that Bieniemy is going to have on this offense.
Safe to say that Kansas City's offense has a great chance of getting back on track, with both Bieniemy and Walker deserving equal credit for the expected turnaround that lies ahead.
