Could Omar Khan Have Another Summer Surprise Up His Sleeve?

Omar Khan has been moving and shaking at a rate that was almost unthinkable during the Kevin Colbert era. One of his first big actions as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ GM was trading up in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Many other trades and aggressive moves have followed.

Nobody saw the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade coming last offseason, but the Steelers were all-in on the Aaron Rodgers window and didn’t hesitate to make a move they thought could improve the roster.

Could Khan have another summer surprise up his sleeve this year?

After OLB Nick Herbig’s $100 million extension, there’s already been plenty of speculation about Pittsburgh dealing one of either Alex Highsmith or T.J. Watt.

Watt would be very difficult to move due to his age and contract, but Highsmith is younger and much cheaper for any interested trade partners.

The temptation might be to look for 2027 draft capital in return but look at last year’s model of what a potential summer surprise would look like. Pittsburgh wants to compete now, which means it would likely be looking for player(s) in return.

At what positions are the Steelers overstocked? And where could they use help?

The top three positions to add to would be inside linebacker, safety, and wide receiver. The top three positions they could stand to subtract from are outside linebacker, cornerback, and offensive line.

The Steelers’ offseason actions, aside from maybe drafting Drew Allar in the third round, have been focused on winning now. They didn’t sign Jamel Dean, trade for Michael Pittman Jr., and bring Aaron Rodgers back to kick off a rebuild.

The roster is stronger than it’s been in nearly a decade.

There was little to no buzz about the Steelers trading Minkah Fitzpatrick before it happened. If Omar Khan has already proven he’s willing to make the unexpected move once, what makes anyone so sure he’s finished?
