Federico Chiesa has dropped a massive hint regarding Curtis Jones joining Inter Milan this summer, suggesting the midfielder may leave Liverpool.
Jones had a frustrating time of things under Arne Slot, struggling to be a key starter and reportedly even falling out with the Dutchman.
Andoni Iraola may have come in and replaced Slot as Liverpool’s head coach, but that hasn’t done much to alter reports of a move away from the 25-year-old in the summer transfer window.
Now, Chiesa has seemingly only added fuel to the fire, with the Italian telling Gazzetta dello Sport [via Fabrizio Romano on X] that Jones has been asking him about life in his homeland:
“Jones asked me what it’s like living in Italy. I told him it’s brilliant and the weather’s much better than in Liverpool. Curtis is technically outstanding, Inter are right to be considering him.”
Liverpool must push hard to keep hold of Curtis Jones
Jones isn’t always the most universally popular player at Liverpool, with some supporters critical of aspects of his game, including holding onto the ball for too long.
But the Scouser is still a great squad player who can shine in several positions, with Reds legend Steven Gerrard gushing over his ability in the past:
“Every time Curtis played for me against Everton and Manchester United, he was the man of the match in every single game. That tells me that he’s got what you need to play for Liverpool. Curtis is more talented than me in terms of technical, in terms of dribbling ability, in terms of manipulating the ball, close control.”
It is understandable why a move to Inter could appeal to Jones, allowing him to join the reigning Serie A champions and give himself a chance to test himself in a different country.
But Iraola should be looking to keep hold of the midfielder, not just because of his ability, but also because he is a homegrown player who knows Liverpool inside out.
Jones is still a relatively young footballer, too, so seeing him depart for Inter before his peak years would be both sad and risky for the club.
