CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The father of an NFL quarterback was hired as the next head football coach at a Charlotte high school.

Duke Howell -- the father of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Sam Howell -- will take over the reigns at Myers Park High School. The school confirmed the hire on social media on Friday, June 5.

“Let’s give a warm welcome to our guy! Welcome to THE STABLE Coach Duke Howell,” the post read. “Coach Howell is a veteran coach with a great coaching resume. We believe he will be a great asset to our program.”

The elder Howell was most recently the head coach at Cuthbertson High School in Union County.

He took the job at Myers Park after former coach Chris James stepped down on May 26.

Duke Howell’s son, Sam, is preparing for his fifth season in the NFL.

Sam was a fifth-round pick by Washington in 2022, but was traded to the Seahawks prior to the 2024 season. He was then traded to the Vikings in early 2025, and was then traded again to the Eagles just before the regular season.

Now, the 25-year-old quarterback is a member of the Cowboys after he signed with the team in March. He will compete with Joe Milton to be Dak Prescott’s primary backup.

Across 20 NFL games -- 18 of them starts -- Howell has thrown for 4,139 yards, 22 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He has run for another 300 yards and six scores.

Prior to the NFL, Howell starred at Sun Valley High School in Union County, then collegiately with the UNC Tar Heels.
