Cam Johnson's future with Nuggets takes unexpected turn

The Denver Nuggets are expected to explore the trade market for Cam Johnson this offseason as they look to reduce their luxury tax bill and gain financial flexibility.

The Denver Nuggets could be active on the trade market again this offseason, with Cam Johnson emerging as a potential trade candidate shortly after arriving in Denver.

According to a report by NBA reporter Jake Weinbach, the Nuggets are expected to gauge interest in Johnson as the franchise looks to reduce its luxury tax burden and create additional financial flexibility heading into next season.

Johnson is entering the final year of his contract and is set to earn 23 million dollars, making him an attractive option for teams searching for shooting on the wing.

The 30-year-old remains one of the league's more reliable floor spacers. This season, he connected on 43 percent of his three-point attempts, a skill that is expected to generate interest from multiple teams around the NBA.

In 54 appearances, Johnson averaged 12.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 48.0 percent from the field and 43.0 percent from beyond the arc.

Those numbers were down from the previous season with the Brooklyn Nets, when he posted averages of 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game.

Denver acquired Johnson as part of the deal that sent Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick away to the Brooklyn Nets.
