‘You Don’t Belong’ — Tua Tagovailoa Makes Stunning Comparison Between Mike McDaniel and Kevin…

Tua Tagovailoa knows better than most how much a coach can impact a quarterback’s career. One voice can chip away at confidence. Another can completely change the path of a player who was once questioning his place in the league.

That is why the Atlanta Falcons quarterback’s famous comments about leadership continue to resonate nearly two years later. Now, Tagovailoa begins a fresh chapter in the Falcons, the early signs suggest he has once again found a coach who believes in what he brings to the table.

Some of the praises, which were heard at the Falcons OTAs on June 4th, include the compliments paid to Tagovailoa by the Falcons head coach, Kevin Stefanski, in just over a week since he has been working with him. These praises come in light of Tagovailoa’s current fight with Michael Penix Jr. for the starting job at the Atlanta Falcons for the 2026 season. It is worth noting that these compliments come in light of one of the most talked about interviews of Tagovailoa in recent times. In his August 19, 2024, interview with Dan Le Batard’s show, Tagovailoa talked about the difference between Brian Flores and Mike McDaniel. In doing so, Tagovailoa gave a quote that was sure to go viral.

“To put it in simplest terms, if you woke up every morning and I told you [that] you suck at what you did, that you don’t belong doing what you do, that you shouldn’t be here, that this guy should be here, that you haven’t earned this right, and then you have somebody else come in and tell you, ‘Dude, you are the best fit for this’… How would it make you feel listening to one or the other, you see what I’m saying?”

Tua Tagovailoa didn’t hold back when asked about differences between Mike McDaniel and Kevin Stefanski:

While some recent social media posts have incorrectly linked that quote to Stefanski, Tagovailoa was actually comparing Flores’s coaching style with McDaniels’s leadership in the Dolphins.

Fast forward to 2026, Stefanski seems to be taking an approach to build confidence. On June 4, during OTAs, the Falcons’ head coach talked to reporters. He said accuracy is an important trait for a QB. Then he specifically mentioned Tagovailoa’s ability as a passer. Stefanski described Tagovailoa’s precision as an “innate God-given ability.” This is an endorsement, especially with the competition from the Falcons.

The timing of this is important. Tagovailoa joined the Falcons after finishing with the Dolphins. He was benched late in the season. Then left the team. He still has some great achievements. He went to a Pro Bowl. He led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 with 4,624 yards. He had a 72.9 percent completion rate for the season.

Stefanski and Tagovailoa both have something to prove. They both had exits from their previous teams. This shared motivation could be a storyline for the Falcons this offseason.

The quarterback battle is not yet.. After the first 10 days of OTAs one thing is clear: Tagovailoa has the confidence of his new head coach. For a quarterback whose career has been shaped by the people, around him this might be the important development yet.
