EXCLUSIVE - Alan Smith Says Gary Lineker Is Completely Wrong Following Harsh Arsenal Criticism

Arsenal legend Alan Smith says he very much disagrees with Gary Lineker’s verdict on the Champions League final.

The Gunners were criticised for their defensive approach, and following Paris Saint-Germain’s victory on penalties, Lineker stated that “football won” as he felt that Luis Enrique’s team played the game in the right manner.

Speaking exclusively to Gooner News (courtesy of Best Betting Sites UK), Smith made it clear that he has no time for critics of Arsenal’s performance against PSG:

“I hate that phrase, ‘football won’. What does it even mean? Arsenal can’t compete toe to toe with PSG at the moment because PSG have got better forwards. So, you know, you cut your cloth according to what you’ve got.”

“And there’s a lot to be admired in a very strong defence. And Arsenal have got the best. And that is football. You know, that is a part of football. You can’t say it’s all about attacking. You’ve got to defend as well. So, yeah, I don’t go along with my old strike partner there.”

Arsenal should make no apologies for the way they play

While it isn’t always pleasing on the eye, you cannot deny the results that the Gunners have had playing this way, especially in Europe.

It needs to be pointed out that Mikel Arteta’s side did not lose a game across 90 (or even 120 minutes) during the 2025/26 edition of the Champions League. That is a phenomenal achievement.

When you take into account that they reached the semi-finals last season too, their style is perfectly suited to the tournament, especially the knockout rounds.

Arteta wants to add firepower

While Arsenal should not have to defend themselves for their style of play, there are clearly areas where they can strengthen, especially up front.

Talking after the Champions League final defeat, Arteta spoke about taking his team to “another level”, and that is interpreted to mean improving on the ball.
