If you support Leicester or Bangladesh, or have seen Hamza Choudhury play for Sheffield United, Watford, or Burton Albion, you may have various views about the player and his role on different teams throughout his career.
A big brother and one who said to have great empathy, Choudhury, decided to represent Bangladesh in 2024. He is no longer a young player, turning 29 in October. His tally of goals for his new nation is amazing, allready on 4 goals in 10 international appearances.
This season has been tough for his club, Leicester, as they’ve been relegated to the third tier of English football. Growing up in nearby Loughborough, he has been with the club since he was 8 years old. He was once considered a potential player for Barcelona.
Watching Hamza Choudhury play in his early years was exciting. He developed a unique tackling technique as a professional player. He came up with Ben Chilwell, Harvey Barnes, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the Leicester academy, and all of them progressed to become notable Premier League players, fetching high transfer fees for Leicester.
Hamza Choudhury is still with Leicester. He is contracted to the club until next summer, and said he would be at the club next season to help them back to EFL Championship. Being in a very competitive environment and going from a robust progress under Brendan Rodgers to a difficult structural change under a number of new managers, not really being able to claim his place in the team.
Last season, he played mostly as a right back, a position he can fill, but he shines more in central defensive midfield. He was earlier an understudy to Wilfred Ndidi, who moved to Besiktas last summer, leaving the role open for Hamza Choudhury to flourish. We hoped the Bangladesh international would get his opportunity throughout the season, but he was shuffled around the team and played in defence instead.

HAMZA CHOUDHURY
Bangladesh
His importance in English football has decreased, but in Bangladesh, he is more popular than most footballers could imagine. With a population of 177 million, having an English player with Premier League experience on your team makes you stand out.
Watching the LCFC documentary about his journey as a full international for Bangladesh is inspiring. He has never had the opportunity to play regularly with Leicester, which is unfortunate, especially since he was once linked with Barcelona as a youngster.
A few unfortunate off field incidents and his chilling style might not help him all the time, but that has been overlooked by special men, such as Enzo Maresca and Chris Wilder. Enzo having him as captain, and Wilder picking him as a trusted member of his teams.
His talent hasn’t been given the correct focus, and looking in perspective he has not received the recognition he deserves. Now he serves as a role model for others in a very different part of the world.
Not that Hamza Choudhury isn’t used to this country, he has travelled there many times as a child and possibly also getting to a grown up age. Then since 2024 of course getting his regular visits, being able to help out and of course having skills and an upbringing football, his teammates could dream of.
To be part of Leicester’s academy and youth system must be the best learning you could get. This club have nursed forward special footballers. Peter Shilton and Gary Lineker are just two Leicester lads, getting to world fame via their upbringing in this football club. The players mentioned above has left Leicester to build great careers at other clubs.
Hamza Choudhury has taken on a very different role, dropping his dream of becoming a full England international, deciding to go down the route to play international football for a nation far from the heights of world football.
To see a player with 7 appearances for England U.21 return to his father’s country to help and succeed in a new environment deserves great respect. While cultural differences in football can present challenges, Hamza Choudhury seems to have managed to balance everything well.
How Hamza Choudhury’s journey will unfold is hard to predict. He might stay in League One with Leicester or move elsewhere. One thing is clear: he is a popular figure in Bangladesh, loved by his people after just 10 international games.
He has changed Bangladesh football.
