Night of football celebrations lands man with driving ban

A man got behind the wheel with an excessive amount of alcohol in his system after celebrating Arsenal Football Club winning the Premier League.

Max Phillip, of St Michael's Close, Hockering, pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared at Lynn’s Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Police were carrying out speed checks on the A47 in Little Fransham on May 18, when Phillip approached, travelling over the 40mph limit.

Phillip was stopped in the nearby layby, where a positive roadside breath test was conducted. The reading was 59mcg of alcohol in his system per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

In mitigation, solicitor George Sorrell said the defendant worked as a senior engineer before having to give up his job to look after his 17-year-old daughter, who suffers from mental health issues following the death of her mother two years ago.

Mr Sorrell said Phillip does not normally drink alcohol, but he is an Arsenal fan, so he went out with his friends to celebrate the team's triumph.

While Phillip was out, he received a call from his daughter, so he got into the vehicle and drove home.

Mr Sorrell said: “There was no indication of bad driving, and he is really remorseful.”

Phillip was previously convicted of drink-driving in 2018.

During his court appearance, he was handed a 36-month disqualification and was fined £230.

He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £92 and court costs of £110.
