The Serie A side have moved swiftly to replace Fabio Grosso, with a former Liverpool midfielder chosen as his successor.

The man who is set to take over the team is Alberto Aquilani, who has put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2028.

For Liverpool supporters, Aquilani is a familiar name. The Italian arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2009 after Rafael Benitez sanctioned a move from Roma following Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid.

Injuries disrupted much of his time on Merseyside, preventing him from ever establishing himself as a regular starter, with just 18 appearances made before departing the club in 2012.

Now, more than a decade after leaving Liverpool, the 41-year-old is making headlines for his achievements in the dugout rather than on the pitch.

His most recent role came with Serie B side Catanzaro, where he built a reputation as of the country’s brightest coaching talents.

Taking over at Sassuolo provides Aquilani with the biggest managerial role of his career so far and represents a significant step up for the former Liverpool man.

Replacing Grosoo is no easy task, yet Sassuolo’s decision to hand Aquilani a three-year contract underlines the confidence they have in his long-term vision.

For Liverpool fans, the move will be another reason to keep an eye on one of the club’s former players as he continues to carve out a new career away from the pitch.

Aquilani’s playing days may be long behind him, but his latest appointment suggests his most successful chapter in football could just be in the dugout.
