Of all the players currently being linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, few generate quite as much anticipation as Yan Diomande.

The RB Leipzig winger, 19, appears to have Europe's top clubs scrapping to secure his signature. A total of 13 goals and 10 assists across 36 Bundesliga appearances, playing on either flank, suggest the youngster is destined for the very top.

Liverpool has been strongly linked with the talent, along with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. Salia Drame, a journalist with Ivory Coast-based publication Abidjan Sports, has shed light on why Diomande is so coveted.

He revealed that the teenager boasts a playing style comparable to that of Reds and Senegal legend Sadio Mane and Chelsea icon Eden Hazard.

"Yan is a versatile player, capable of performing on both the left and right wings. Extremely explosive, he possesses an ability to beat defenders that is well above average," Drame told the Liverpool Echo. "He is also capable of tracking back defensively when needed, making him a player with a very wide range of skills."

Drame added: "His ability to beat defenders, his drive, and his comfort in one-on-one situations are reminiscent of Sadio Mane at the peak of his powers. As for his ability to hold the ball with his back to goal and resist pressure, it brings to mind [Ex-Chelsea forward] Eden Hazard in his best years."

Born in 2006 in the skyscraper-dominated metropolis of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Diomande's ability on the soccer pitch prompted a move to the United States at merely 15, where he joined the Florida-based DME Academy to hone his skills.

In October 2023, he underwent a trial with Scottish outfit Rangers but proved unsuccessful despite featuring in a pre-season fixture for the club's B team against Monaco. He also turned out for Olympiacos in another unsuccessful trial period. His early disappointments have only strengthened the youngster's understanding of professional football's highs and lows.

"I was alone when I went on those trials, but I'm grateful for those experiences," Diomande revealed earlier this year. "They helped me understand that I can make it through life on my own if I have to."

It was ultimately a promising transfer to La Liga outfit Leganes in November 2024, where Diomande caught Leipzig's eye, and the club secured his signature a year later. Drame believes Diomande's raw talent could even see him become a future recipient of the Golden Boy award, an accolade bestowed upon players under 21 who have excelled in Europe's top-flight leagues.

Previous recipients include: Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero, Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, and Jude Bellingham. PSG star Desire Doue claimed the honor in 2025. "With his technical qualities, his explosiveness, his personality on the pitch, and his ability to make a difference, he has all the tools to eventually become one of the best players in the world," Drame said.

So what are Liverpool's genuine chances of landing the forward? The player himself has previously expressed his fondness for the Reds. "I want to play at Anfield, I want to play for Liverpool," Diomande said earlier this year.

"I'm a big fan of Liverpool. I'm a big fan of Liverpool because my father's dream is to see me play at Anfield. So that's my dream. You know, to fulfill my father's dream is a dream for me too."

Diomande subsequently retracted those remarks, revealing that his father is also a PSG supporter. Regardless, prising the youngster away will demand considerable financial muscle. While Leipzig is intent on retaining Diomande, who is contracted until 2030, it is understood that a bid in excess of £87 million ($116 million) could convince the German club to part with him.

A standout World Cup display from Diomande this year could also drive that valuation significantly higher. That said, Leipzig chairman Oliver Mintzlaff made clear he would not entertain selling Diomande regardless of "what price is being offered."
