The Browns had a very high value on Jared Verse

The Cleveland Browns fandom is still reeling from the trade of Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. It was a move that took the NFL world by storm, and one that left a lot of Browns fans wondering why team GM Andrew Berry received such a small return. After all, Maxx Crosby, before the deal to the Baltimore Ravens was axed, went for two first-round picks.

Garrett, however, went for a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick. They also got back Jared Verse in the deal as well. Many fans believed the return to be lacking, as they just dealt a two-time Defensive Player of the Year for a handful of picks and a defensive end who only has 12 career sacks over two seasons.

Many fans hoped for two first-round picks at minimum, and while it may not be how things actually shook out, the Browns apparently did get an equivalent return.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Browns saw Verse as a guy who could possibly fetch them a first and a third-round pick in a trade on his own.

"...the Browns assigned dollar values to both sides of the trade, to try to achieve the right balance," Breer wrote. "In doing so, they valued Verse as a player who would fetch, bare minimum, a first- and third-round pick in a trade, more likely a first and a second, and, if there was an aggressive bidding war, a max of two first-rounders."

It certainly feels like Verse could be a guy who is only here for a fun time and not a long time, assuming the team is looking to do a near-full tear down and rebuild come 2027. Either way, the Browns view Verse as a guy who has a lot of inherent value behind what he brings to the football field, and if he can make a real impact against the run and the pass in 2026, he may just improve his stock.
