US authorities hold back members of Iraq’s national football team

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – While 60 members of Iraq’s national football team delegation arrived safely in Chicago on June 5, 2026, two were kept back for further screening by US immigration officials, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Embassy in Washington.

One of those stopped was famous national team star Aymen Hussein, who was interrogated and interviewed by US authorities at Chicago O’Hare International Airport for seven hours before being authorized to enter and join the squad.

Out of the 62 delegation members, 60 made their way successfully.

One person, confirmed to be forward Aymen Hussein, successfully completed the additional processes and was allowed entry.

The second person was completely denied entry due to specific United States immigration laws and restrictions.

The Iraqi Embassy in Washington indicated that it was in constant communication with the United States Department of State and local authorities at Chicago airport to resolve the problems.

The embassy underscored that border operations are entirely under the direct supervision of US immigration officials and cannot be bypassed by third parties.

The Iraqi squad headed to the United States for a training camp in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite the logistical challenges that its staff and players face, the majority of the group is currently in Chicago, where they will continue their training.
