'Opportunity' - Nathan Patterson sent World Cup message amid Sheffield United transfer interest

Everton defender Nathan Patterson is on Sheffield United’s radar ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Former Everton and Scotland striker Graeme Sharp has urged Sheffield United transfer target Nathan Patterson to use this summer’s World Cup as an opportunity to put himself in the shop window.

The Everton right-back has made it into Steve Clarke’s 26-man squad for what will be Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998. They will get their Group C schedule underway when they face Haiti at 2am BST next Sunday morning.

They will take on Morocco on June 19 before concluding their group stage schedule against Brazil on June 24. Scotland will be hoping to make it out of the group stage for the very first time.

As reported by The Star on Friday, Patterson is understood to still be on on United’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window opening for business on June 15. The Blades considered swooping for the 24-year-old ahead of landing Ki-Jana Hoever on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers back in January.

Following Hoever’s return to Molineux, United manager Chris Wilder is keen to strengthen his right-back options this summer in a bid to provide some competition for Femi Seriki. Patterson barely featured for Everton this season, making just eight appearances.

With the Toffees understood to be on the hunt for a new right-back this summer following the departure of long-serving defender Seamus Coleman, they may be prepared to let Patterson depart. With that said, Everton legend Sharp hopes the former Rangers man will make his mark at the World Cup.

“He'll be looking at this as an ideal opportunity to either show David Moyes he's ready to play or be in the shop window," Sharp told The Scotsman.

“I know there's been rumours about Rangers again but for Nathan, it's not been a great season for him, but what an opportunity. He could be on the sunbed somewhere; now he’s in the World Cup finals. Wow. I know what I would want to do.”

Patterson, who was an unused substitute in Scotland’s 4-0 win over Bolivia on Saturday, has faced his fair share of injury problems since joining Everton from Rangers in 2022, meaning those setbacks have derailed his progress.

Sharp continued: “If I'm being brutally honest I think he's struggled a little bit and I don't think the injuries have helped him. Obviously he hasn't had a continuous run in the team.

“The manager’s playing Jake O'Brien who's a centre back at right back and he's done well the kid so it's been hard for Nathan. But certainly the injuries haven't helped him.

“I think if he stays injury free and gets a run of games, I think he'll do okay and I think he'll do all right.”
