Massive: Liverpool could sell Slot favourite for £73.5m after Iraola arrival

Arne Slot has been replaced at Liverpool by Andoni Iraola, and this could see Cody Gakpo leave the club, according to reports.

Gakpo was one of the most criticised Liverpool players last season, with his predictable performances frustrating supporters. The Dutchman seemed to repeat the same ‘cut in and shoot’ pattern despite the lack of success.

He enjoyed a fine 2024-25 campaign, but the lack of competition after Luis Diaz’s move to Bayern Munich meant Gakpo’s poor form had zero consequences.

Now, reports suggest that Gakpo could be sold to Tottenham this summer after they signed Andy Robertson on a free transfer.

Tottenham preparing club record £73.5m bid for Gakpo

According to a report from Football365, Tottenham are gearing up to make a massive bid to sign Gakpo this summer as the Londoners look to avoid a repeat of their near-relegation.

The report cites claims in Spain: “Tottenham are ready to go all in for Gakpo and smash their transfer record.

“It’s stated Spurs are ready to ‘launch’ an €85m / £73.5m bid for Gakpo, who would surpass Dominic Solanke (£65m add-ons included) as their all-time record buy.

“De Zerbi is claimed to be a long-time admirer of Gakpo, and Tottenham’s alleged imminent bid is not a spur of the moment thing. Tottenham are claimed to want a versatile forward who is equally adept at operating out wide or up front. Gakpo fits that billing.”

£73.5m for Gakpo is good business, but it complicates Liverpool’s transfer plans

While it’s true that £73.5m for Gakpo is simply too good to turn down, it will complicate already tricky transfer plans.

The simple truth of Liverpool’s situation is that they have left themselves rather a lot of work to do this summer. After not replacing Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah last summer, the Reds need to sign their replacements this summer.

So if they sell Gakpo, it means Liverpool will need to sign three wingers. One to replace Diaz, one to replace Gakpo and one to replace Mohamed Salah.

That’s before a new centre-back is signed, while Iraola will need to sign a defensive midfielder if his aggressive style of play is to succeed next season.
