William Gomes to Arsenal: Is the Brazilian Ready for the Premier League?
Brazilian outlet Globo first reported that Arsenal have entered talks with the representatives of Porto winger William Gomes over a potential summer move. The 20-year-old registered 13 goals and two assists from 2,157 minutes across all competitions for the Portuguese champions last season. Arsenal, Manchester United, and Atletico Madrid have since intensified their efforts, submitting enquiries to Porto, with the Spanish giants reportedly taking the lead in the battle for his signature.
Gomes moved from São Paulo to Porto in January 2025 for a fee of €9 million, signing a contract until June 2029, with a release clause set at €80 million. Porto are determined to keep the winger for another season and are not keen to entertain offers, though there may be a chance to do a deal if a large bid is received. Portuguese publication Correio da Manha cite that Porto want at least £52 million, with Sao Paulo holding a 20% sell-on clause from the original transfer.
William Gomes to Arsenal: What Makes Him a Target
Operating mainly as an inverted winger, Gomes was instrumental in guiding Porto back to the top of the Primeira Liga last season, firmly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young talents in world football. Arsenal have a pre-existing relationship with Porto, having previously signed Fabio Vieira from the club and most recently loaning Jakub Kiwior there on a deal that turned permanent. His pace, dribbling, and left-footed striking ability from the right side have caught the eye of multiple European clubs beyond just the Gunners.
William Gomes to Arsenal: Does Arteta Actually Need Him?
Arsenal already carry four left-footed right wingers in their current setup. Bukayo Saka remains an undisputed starter from the right flank, with Noni Madueke acting as the immediate cover. Max Dowman demonstrated last season that he can function there, and Ethan Nwaneri offers yet another graduate option from that position. Paying £52 million or more for a fifth option in that specific role makes very little tactical sense for Arteta right now.
Arsenal chiefs have identified two major priorities this summer, namely a world-class striker to provide competition for Viktor Gyokeres, and a new left-sided winger to add real pep to the attack. Morgan Rogers has reportedly given the thumbs up to joining Arsenal, with the 23-year-old England international identified as a prime target after scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 55 matches for Aston Villa. Rogers brings proven Premier League quality, experience, and versatility that Gomes simply cannot match right now.

A William Gomes to Arsenal transfer remains an interesting story, but the numbers, the positional logic, and the alternative options all point in the same direction. Porto will not sell cheaply, Arteta does not need another right winger, and Arsenal have bigger business to attend to this summer.
