Best leveling up

Last year, Iron Blossom Festival provided an endlessly immersive musical escape – a door through which Richmonders could disappear into live music for two tuneful days. A surprise downpour and a couple of evacuations did not dampen the mood, thanks to the cozy environs and stellar performances by the likes of the Lumineers and Vampire Weekend, as well as memorable early evening sets from the Teskey Brothers and Rainbow Kitten Surprise. The festival returns this year on Sept. 19-20 to Midtown Green, the former Washington Commanders training facility, picking up where last year’s event left off in terms of high-powered, top-ofposter talent. Regardless of the weather, attendees will dance themselves clean to the sounds of electro-punk band LCD Soundsystem on Saturday, then bask in the glow of guitar deity Jack White on Sunday. Joining them will be 20 supporting artists from near and far. The lineup includes Richmond-affiliated standouts – McKinley Dixon, Night Idea and Shera Shi – and a dazzling array of some of the most critically acclaimed acts in today’s musical landscape. Dijon and Geese will be on hand – both near the top of critics’ best albums lists last year, both recent alums of “Saturday Night Live” and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – as well as Angine de Poitrine, the anonymous, masked microtonal funk duo from Québec. Dave Niedbalski of festival partner Grand Rising Curations is most looking forward to the acts playing Richmond for the first time: “Over half have never made a stop through the city, and I think it’s exciting to finally have those bands in town,” he says.
