Ex-Premier League Star Could Make Stunning Return to Former Club

Following a disastrous summer transfer window in 2025, Liverpool are looking to pick up the pieces under the stewardship of new head coach Andoni Iraola. Being one of the biggest clubs in the world, they have been linked with an array of top talents, regardless of their financial situation.

One name sticks out from amongst the rest – Darwin Nunez, who the Reds sold to Al-Hilal last season for just under £46 million, could make a sensational return to Anfield on a free transfer in the coming weeks.

Being out of favour at Al-Hilal, he is currently in the process of terminating his current contract, which would allow him to leave the club without any sort of outside fee being involved.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are ‘weighing up’ the possibility of bringing Nunez back to the club, despite having sold him the previous summer. They aren’t alone, however – Benfica, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are also thought to be in the race for his signature.

Nevertheless, despite the myriad of competition to snap Nunez up, a report from Mundo Deportivo suggests that Liverpool would be Nunez’s preferred choice. As such, the Reds can be considered the favourites to secure a move as things stand – but should they action this? Let’s take a look.

As you can see, Nunez didn’t have a poor season in the Saudi Pro League by any means. Sadly, upon Karim Benzema’s arrival at the club, someone had to drop out to fit the squad registration rules and it was deemed that the Uruguayan would be the one to take the hit.

An all-action forward, Nunez’s strengths and weaknesses are readily apparent. He is very quick and powerful, but he struggles on the mental side of the game.

His decision making is poor at best – furthermore, he lacks the composure in front of goal that one might expect from an elite centre-forward. This may improve as time passes, but Nunez is now 26 years of age – his time to improve upon his game is rapidly depleting.

Should Liverpool re-sign Darwin Nunez?

To put it in the bluntest of terms, we feel that Liverpool’s priorities should lie elsewhere in the summer transfer window. They already have two first-team strikers on their books – do they really need to add another?

Yes, Hugo Ekitike is injured and won’t be fit to play until midway through next season. Additionally, Alexander Isak has struggled massively since he made the jump to Anfield. Nevertheless, we feel that the Reds have made their bed – now, they must sleep in it.

This is without mentioning Cody Gakpo, who can also function as a striker. In fact, some Liverpool fans might even suggest that he is at his best when played as a number nine.

Furthermore, with so many other clubs having been linked with a move for Nunez, this is a battle Liverpool do not need to fight. Even on a free transfer, Nunez simply isn’t worth the hassle at this time.
