After a long process stemming from a gambling scandal this offseason, Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby is reportedly set to be eligible to play at the NCAA level in 2026 after all. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Monday that a Texas judge granted his injunction.

Sorsby was widely expected to be one of the first quarterbacks selected in the 2027 draft. But the gambling scandal put those hopes in serious jeopardy. Sorsby was put under NCAA investigation after placing “thousands” of bets. He entered a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction, one he finished recently.
There was plenty of talk about the supplemental draft, which Sorsby would have been forced to enter had his injunction not been granted. As recently as last Friday, Texas Tech’s appeal to the NCAA to have Sorsby reinstated was denied. Sorsby’s own injunction was his last chance to play at the NCAA level this year. If it wasn’t granted, he would have had to submit paperwork for the supplemental draft by the end of the month.
The Steelers have never selected a player in the supplemental draft before. And with two young quarterbacks already on the roster, it doesn’t seem like they would have been in on Brendan Sorsby anyway. Especially since selecting him in the supplemental draft would sacrifice a pick in next year’s NFL draft.
However, Sorsby spending this season at the collegiate level could actually make his chances of landing in Pittsburgh grow. With Aaron Rodgers heading into his final year, the Steelers could take a closer look at the 2027 quarterback class. That’s one Sorsby will now be in, along with potential names like Arch Manning, Dante Moore, LaNorris Sellers and more.
Of course, Drew Allar and Will Howard’s presence on the roster, makes things interesting. Perhaps one of them shows enough that the Steelers don’t have interest in that class anyway. But as third and sixth-round picks respectively, neither is really a lock to become a franchise quarterback.
For now, we likely won’t have to hear anymore headlines regarding Brendan Sorsby until the 2027 draft cycle rolls around. But after being allowed to play at Texas Tech this year, the 2027 class is one he’s set to be a part of.
