Posted on June 8, 2026 8:00 pm | Updated on June 8, 2026 4:04 pm Sandro Tonali has emerged as a serious Arsenal target, with his agent already making contact.

The transfer window is not open yet, but the noise around it already is. Sandro Tonali is one of the hottest midfield names in Europe right now, and the latest news coming out of Arsenal suggests the Gunners have reignited their interest in the Newcastle midfielder. A former Gunners star has now come out to back the move publicly.
Sandro Tonali and the Backing From a Former Gunner
Nacho Monreal made 251 appearances for the club between 2013 and 2019. The Spanish left back knows what it takes to succeed at the Emirates. And he thinks Sandro Tonali would be a perfect fit. As reported by The Mirror, he said, “If Arsenal sign Tonali, obviously they will have the best midfield in the world.”
That is a bold claim. But it is hard to argue with. The Gunners already have Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the middle. Adding the Italian to that group would give Arteta a midfield that most clubs can only dream of.
Monreal did raise one concern, though. He noted the club spent big on Zubimendi only last summer. Having both him and Tonali alongside Rice would likely mean one has to go. “In my opinion, they already have the two best defensive midfielders in the world,” he said. It is a fair and honest point.
Why the Sandro Tonali Link Has Come Back Around
As reported by The Mirror, the Italian first came onto the Gunners’ radar in January. Merino had picked up a foot injury and Arteta needed cover for him. Reports emerged that Sandro Tonali had been offered to the club on deadline day. His agent denied the reports. He said Newcastle had no plans to let him leave mid-season.

Competitions Matches Goals Assists Interceptions
Premier League 35 0 2 31
FA Cup 3 2 1 2
EFL Cup 4 0 2 3
UCL 11 1 1 14
As reported by TEAMtalk, though, Arteta’s interest never faded. Sources close to the club called him “deadly serious” about a summer deal. It makes sense. Rice carried a huge load throughout a tough **Premier League**season. A player like him would share that weight and keep the England man fresh.
This summer has also brought a new twist. The Magpies missed out on European football. As reported by FootballTransfers, this has made departures more likely. Tonali’s agent has already reached out to the sporting director Andrea Berta. The player wants to stay in the Champions League next year.
Will the Gunners Actually Make a Move?
Newcastle will not make this easy. The Magpies have him tied down until 2029, as per Transfermarkt. Any serious bid would need to reach around £100 million. As reported by TEAMtalk, a trusted Newcastle journalist has also downplayed talk of a formal offer. He added that a midfielder is not the club’s top priority right now.
As reported by GOAL, former Italy star Giuseppe Rossi, who had a loan spell at Newcastle, gave the move his full backing. “He’s a leader out there,” Rossi said. “He provides a lot of quality, but also quantity. These are rare players in our game today.” He also flagged the price. Transfer fees in football have gone through the roof, and the Italian will cost top dollar.
Still, with Josh Kroenke hinting that Berta could get up to £250 million to spend, money may not be the issue. The real question is simpler. Does Arteta actually need Sandro Tonali or does the squad he has make this a luxury rather than a must. That answer will shape the summer. For now, the story runs on.
