Lakers named top landing spot for Knicks' $60 million 7-foot rebounding stud

The Los Angeles Lakers are in an interesting position after their first-round playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Anytime Luka Doncic is in the fold, there’s no question that the goal is to win immediately. At the same time, the Lakers should also prioritize acquiring assets that will play a pivotal role in their future success, as surrounding Doncic with younger, fresher legs will do wonders for the former Dallas Mavericks star in the long run.

According to The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, the Los Angeles Lakers could do just that this offseason, as he recently named the Lakers among the top landing spots for the New York Knicks’ 7-foot rebounding stud.

"Teams regularly relayed to me when I’ve asked around about (Mitchell) Robinson’s status have pointed to the (Chicago) Bulls, (Charlotte) Hornets, Lakers, and (Toronto) Raptors," Fischer wrote Saturday. "Those are all clubs known to be looking for center upgrades."

The Knicks will likely pose the biggest threat to the Lakers for Mitchell’s services, as New York will likely make a valiant effort to retain the valuable second-unit big man. The former second-round pick has made a name for himself in the big leagues thanks to his high-level rebounding chops/instincts and stout perimeter defense.

Mitchell’s two-way contributions have much to do with the Knicks being two wins away from their first championship since 1973. The 28-year-old is averaging 5.2 points and 5.3 rebounds with the Knicks this postseason, shooting a remarkable 73.8% from beyond the arc. Mitchell’s 11.6 rebounds per 40 minutes this season prove just how dependable he is on the offensive and defensive glass for the Knicks.

Winning the Mitchell sweepstakes won’t be easy, but there’s no doubt the Lakers will be in the running this summer.
