Analyst Explains Why Michael Pittman Jr. Could Become ‘Breakout Star’

The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired their long-needed WR2 this offseason when they traded for WR Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts. With the Steelers struggling to get much receiving production outside of DK Metcalf last season, there’s potential for Pittman to have a big season.

That’s why CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan named Pittman a potential “breakout star” in 2026.

“In 2025, Metcalf led the Steelers with 850 receiving yards, while the next most-productive wide receiver was Calvin Austin III with 372 receiving yards,” Sullivan wrote. “Pittman now gives them a solid go-to option opposite Metcalf, hauling in 80 passes for 784 yards and seven touchdowns last season in Indianapolis. He could be a difference maker in what is slated to be Aaron Rodgers’ final season.”

Pittman isn’t the traditional breakout candidate. He’s had plenty of NFL success, including two seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. In 2023, Pittman was one of the best receivers in football with 109 receptions for 1,152 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, he had a career-high seven receiving touchdowns.

But Pittman’s production has dropped a bit since his strong 2023 campaign, failing to break 900 yards. He’s the archetype of receiver that Aaron Rodgers has had success with in the past. His ability to work the middle of the field and get open underneath should be beneficial with Rodgers looking to get the ball out quickly.

The Steelers also drafted Germie Bernard, who should begin his career working in the slot. But behind Metcalf, Bernard and Pittman, there’s a lot of unknown about how the receiver room will shake out. That could allow more opportunities for Pittman and help him put together a year that’s closer to his 2023 season.

While Pittman could very well see his numbers spike, he’ll also be valuable to the Steelers for his ability to open things up for Metcalf. Metcalf was good but not great in his first season with the Steelers and struggled with consistency. Having another threat at receiver should mean defenses won’t be able to focus as much on Metcalf, allowing him to do more damage in his second year in Pittsburgh.

Pittman is going to be an asset to the Steelers offense this year, and while he might not “break out” in the sense of having a career year, he could help the Steelers offense take a step forward and become a better unit. If he can open up the passing game, the trade for Pittman will have been well worth it.
