In the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys looked for ways to solve their problem after a difficult 2025 season, as the offense continued to be one of the best in the league, but the defense has been holding the Cowboys back. This led to many changes that began with hiring Christian Parker as defensive coordinator.
Just a few weeks after OTA practices have started, early results look promising. While not necessarily the most flattering endorsement comes from head coaches or executives, one of the best ones is from star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Speaking during Cowboys OTAs on June 4, 2026, Lamb admitted the Cowboys defense has become one of the toughest units he’s faced in practice in recent years. The five-time Pro Bowler described preparing against Parker’s scheme as “annoying,” however, his explanation made it clear the comment was intended as praise rather than criticism.
“It’s annoying. It’s been annoying to prepare against. But obviously seeing it in practice every day, it’s kind of unique. Just seeing the different guys communicate and be able to understand and take what they learn from the meeting room and being able to easily translate it on the field. It’s good to go against. It’s very tricky.”

Lamb’s comments stood out because they touched on two areas that plagued Dallas throughout the 2025 season: communication and execution. Often, the Cowboys looked really disconnected on defense. This led to blown assignments and costly breakdowns. According to Lamb, those issues are already getting better under Parker.
The new coordinator came to the Cowboys with a reputation for developing backs. He teaches coverage concepts. His system is influenced by the Vic Fangio coaching style. It is designed to hide what the defense will do before the snap. This forces offenses to figure out the coverage after the play starts.
This challenge is already noticeable for their offense. This offseason, head coach Brian Schottenheimer explained that Parker’s defense is built around making quarterbacks think fast after the snap. By showing what coverage they will play before the ball is snapped, defenders hold their positions. They rotate late creating uncertainty and slowing down decision-making.
That is what Lamb appears to be experiencing on the practice field. The star receiver specifically praised the defense’s communication. He noted how quickly players are learning and applying what they learn in practice. For a unit with new faces and players learning a new system this development may be just as important as any change in their defensive strategy.
There is still a way to go before the Cowboys can say their defensive problems are solved. OTAs and training camps are very different from regular-season football. Still the fact that one of the NFLs receivers is calling the defense “tricky” and “annoying” is a good sign.
As for the Cowboys team trying to bounce after a disappointing year those daily practice frustrations might be exactly what the defense needed to hear. The Cowboys defense needs to keep working.
