The Dallas Cowboys’ defense was among the worst in the NFL last season. It cost them the playoffs and, eventually, Mike McCarthy his job. Christian Parker arrived this offseason as the new defensive coordinator with a Vic Fangio-based scheme, a rebuilt roster, and a mandate to fix it.
After Thursday’s OTAs, the best receiver on the Cowboys’ offense gave the most credible early assessment possible.
CeeDee Lamb called the defense annoying. Intentionally.

“It’s annoying. It’s been annoying to prepare against,” Lamb told Jon Machota of The Athletic. “But obviously seeing it in practice every day, it’s kind of unique. Just seeing the different guys communicate and be able to understand and take what they learn from the meeting room and being able to easily translate it on the field. It’s good to go against. It’s very tricky.”
He added separately: “As an offense, we’ve just got to play fast and get to our spots.”

Why that word choice from someone like Lamb actually matters
Miscommunication was one of the primary reasons Dallas’ defense struggled so badly in 2025. Matt Eberflus ran a simpler system that opponents could predict and attack. Parker’s scheme is derivative of the Vic Fangio system, which relies on disguised coverages, complex pre-snap looks, and players who can process quickly and communicate across the field.
That’s exactly what good defenses do. And it’s what Dallas hasn’t had in years.
Jerry Jones put the stakes plainly back in March.
“Had we played a lick of defense last year, we would’ve had ourselves, I think, a real playoff run,” he said.

The Cowboys ranked second in the league in total offense in 2025 and still missed the playoffs. The math is not a difficult one.
Quinnen Williams said last week that 90 percent of the defensive staff has turned over and that all the top defenses in the league run variations of Parker’s scheme. Lamb is now saying, from the other side of the line, that it’s giving him genuine problems to solve in preparation.
Together those two endorsements, from a defensive tackle and the offensive player who knows better than anyone what good coverage feels like, are the clearest early signal that Parker’s rebuild is ahead of schedule.
It’s June. Pads haven’t gone on yet. But Lamb being annoyed is a start.
