Why Spike Lee is wearing a Pope Leo 14 Knicks jersey to NBA Finals Game 3

Spike Lee is making a big bet that God is a New York Knicks fan.

Given how the last quarter-century has gone for the Knicks, that seems a bit of a risk. But it's one Lee is taking for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, with help from the current leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV.

Lee plans to rock a Pope Leo 14 jersey, a specialty Knicks edition, for Game 3. It's the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden in 27 years.

The legendary Knicks fan must figure that getting a little help from the divine wouldn't hurt New York's chances.

Why is Spike Lee wearing a Pope Leo 14 Knicks jersey?

That's not just any jersey. It's a special one for a special occasion.

Yes, Lee is repping the pope with the jersey. But it also has the pope's signature on it.

Lee got it signed when he visited the Vatican:

Pope Leo XIV himself likely isn't a Knicks fan, but he did attend Villanova, the same school as Knicks stars Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart.

Orignally Robert Prevost, Pope Leo XIV is the first pope from the United States. He grew up in Chicago.

Lee might be the Knicks' most well-known superfan.

Game 3 of the NBA Finals will tip off at 2:30 a.m. local time in Vatican City, so the odds that the pope watches the game live don't seem particularly high.

But he'll be represented there with his signature on Lee's special jersey.
