Nike urged to give Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama his money from 17-year NBA vet

Leading up to and during the NBA Finals, Victor Wembanyama has established himself as one of the best players in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs star just won the Defensive Player of the Year award, and at 7-foot-4, the Frenchman's offensive skill set has never been seen before. Wemby's Spurs are down 2-0 to the New York Knicks, but a comeback isn't out of the equation, and regardless of how this series concludes, there is no doubting that the former number one overall pick has started to live up to his potential as one of the most highly touted prospects ever.

Now, Wembanyama is headed for sneaker-free agency, as the deal he signed with Nike in 2022, prior to his NBA debut, is set to expire in October. Considering Wembanyama is the future face of the league, he will be highly coveted by shoe companies around the world. In fact, he will go down as one of the top sneaker targets in league history.

Some of the best players in the NBA with well-known shoe brands, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry, are nearing retirement age. Additionally, mega deals with international companies are becoming commonplace. Curry, for example, just signed a 10-year deal worth $400 million with the Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning.

Some of Nike's biggest stars have departed from the company in recent years, too, with Kyrie Irving being perhaps the imfamous example. Nike can't afford to lose Wembanyama, too, as the French star in a great position to run the league for years to come as a global superstar. Lou Williams believes as much, at least, and he thinks that Nike, or any shoe company, must do whatever it takes to give Wemby a long-term contract and signature shoe deal.

“You better throw that bag at him,” Williams said about a potential Wembanyama deal… “Whatever company signs him, don't overthink it, give him the money.”

With the world of basketball shoes ever-evolving, Nike needs to secure Wembanyama as the face of their brand, even if it means signing him to a lifetime deal.
