The New York Jets made two wide receiver moves on Monday afternoon, waiving Quentin Skinner with an injury designation and signing undrafted free agent Jalen Walthall, per the New York Post's Brian Costello.
Skinner had spent the last year with the Jets, signing as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas after the 2025 NFL Draft. He became a bit of a fan-favorite after an exciting preseason last August.
Meanwhile, Walthall is an undrafted free agent out of the University of the Incarnate Word. He signed with the Houston Texans after the 2026 NFL Draft, but was let go recently.
The Jets already have a fairly deep wide receiver room, and it will be difficult for any fringe player to make the final 53-man roster. But it's possible that both pass catchers could eventually make their way back to the practice squad.
Jets cut ties with Quentin Skinner, sign former Texans WR Jalen Walthall
At Incarnate Word in 2025, Walthall made a name for himself at a relatively small football program. He caught 70 passes for 850 yards and hauled in eight touchdowns, averaging 12.1 yards per reception.
According to Pro Football Focus, he was college football's 100th-best wide receiver, earning a 76.8 grade for his standout performance.
Skinner, on the other hand, had one year of experience under his belt with the Jets before being waived.
After showing out in the preseason, Skinner remained on the practice squad for a majority of the regular season, finally making his NFL debut in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills. He caught one pass for 10 yards.
As previously mentioned, it's entirely possible Skinner eventually rejoins the Jets. Depending on the severity of his injury, he could be healthy enough to join the practice squad in August.
In the meantime, Walthall will compete with the likes of Malik McClain, Jamaal Pritchett, Gee Scott Jr., Caullin Lacy, and DT Sheffield for the Jets' final wide receiver spot.
New York's top five pass catchers are essentially locked in. Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, Omar Cooper Jr., Tim Patrick, and Isaiah Williams are all incredibly likely to make the final 53-man roster.
The early favorite for WR6 is 2025 fourth-round pick Arian Smith, who had a lackluster rookie year. But the fact that he has three years remaining on his rookie contract makes it unlikely he's cut.
It will be an interesting storyline to watch as mandatory minicamp and training camp get underway.
