San Francisco 49ers fans are still trying to cope with the fact that Myles Garrett is on the Los Angeles Rams, but it just became clear how bad this new reality is with Garrett throwing out the first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game:
Newest Ram in the house! 🐏🔥
Myles Garrett took the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Saturday's game and absolutely fired a STRIKE right down the pipe to Emmet Sheehan!

Garrett appeared clad in Dodgers gear and delivered a strike right down the middle because, of course, he did. What can’t the guy do?
For Niners fans who are also San Francisco Giants fans, this is nightmare fuel and speaks to the sad reality Bay Area sports fans are facing right now. Both the Niners and the Giants are playing second fiddle to Los Angeles teams.
The Niners are obviously much closer to the Rams than the Giants are to the Dodgers, but the Garrett move certainly widens the gap between the NFC West rivals.
The question is how are the 49ers going to close that gap? Maybe signing Joey Bosa would bring them a little closer, although it doesn’t sound like the Niners are going to sign him. General manager John Lynch has thrown cold water on the notion in the past, and it has also been clear the older Bosa brother is not going to take a discount just to play with his younger brother, Nick.
Many want the Niners to trade for Maxx Crosby, and that would certainly help close the gap more, but there are legitimate questions about Crosby's health and how durable he will be, so that would be a pretty big risk to take.
Sadly, the most likely scenario is the Niners won’t make any sort of corresponding move to try to keep pace. Maybe that will be a prudent decision by Lynch so the team isn’t being overly reactive to what a rival is doing, but it’s still dispiriting to see the gap grow wider, especially as San Francisco’s championship window shrinks year by year.
Realistically, the 49ers just have to try to get into the playoffs this season. They play in an incredibly tough division, so thinking about the No. 1 seed or winning the NFC West shouldn’t be their primary goal.
If they can at least get to the dance and remain fairly healthy, they have enough experience to go on the road and beat just about anybody. The new reality with the Rams is tough to stomach, but the 49ers just have to keep their head down and forge ahead despite it.
